BANGKOK, Thailand – A man was found dead inside a burning home in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district after allegedly firing multiple shots at firefighters attempting to reach the property on 25 September 2026. Police later seized two M60 machine guns, a Desert Eagle handgun, ammunition and several suspected explosive devices from the house on Soi Charatlap, off Sirindhorn Road.

The blaze started around 9.25am, with initial reports indicating people could be trapped inside. The 199 hotline centre dispatched firefighters, rescue workers and water tenders from Bang O Fire and Rescue Station, who entered with hose-lines to fight the flames and search for survivors. Several shots then rang out from inside the property, forcing crews to pull back beyond the firing range. Police and special operations officers were called in, with a SWAT team of more than 10 officers surrounding the house. A 200-metre exclusion zone was set up and nearby residents evacuated as firefighters stopped the flames from spreading. The fire was under control after more than an hour, though smoke lingered in the area.

Officers found the man, reported to be the son of a retired major, seated in a chair with a gun in his hand on the second floor, and police later confirmed he had taken his own life with the firearm. The house held more than ordinary household weapons, officials said, with numerous unidentified explosive objects found alongside the machine guns and high-powered pistol, including one in a room near where the man was discovered.

Explosive ordnance disposal officers, forensic teams and armed special operations personnel inspected the building, removing and destroying explosives while trying to trace the origin of the military-style weapons.
